This guide provides a list of suggested consumer health websites in support of health literacy.

U.S. Government Resources

MedlinePlus  - MedlinePlus is an online health information resource for patients and their families and friends. It is a service of the National Library of Medicine (NLM), the world's largest medical library, which is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Here are some additional information resources provided through Medline: 

  • Medline Plus -  Drugs, Herbs & Supplements - Learn about your prescription drugs and over-the-counter medicines. Includes side effects, dosage, special precautions, and more. Browse dietary supplements and herbal remedies to learn about their effectiveness, usual dosage, and drug interactions.
  • MedLinePlus Genetics - Find consumer-friendly information about the effects of genetic variation on human health.
  • Medline Plus : Complementary & Integrative Medicine - Complementary medicine is used together with mainstream medical care. Find studies and usefulness of many of these practices on this site. 

Healthfinder.gov - Assists with preventive health information. This site is from the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health, Office of the Secretary, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Use the MyHealthFinder tool to see what screening test and vaccines you may need. 

Healthcare.gov : Find Insurance - A service that helps people shop for and enroll in health insurance. The federal government operates the Health Insurance Marketplace®, available at HealthCare.gov, for most states. Some states run their own Marketplaces.

Women's Health.gov - This site has information relevant to critical women's health issues like menopause, cervical cancer, breastfeeding, and more. This site is supported by the Office on Women's Health (OWH). 

SAMHSA : Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration - SAMHSA leads public health and service delivery efforts that treat mental illness, especially serious mental illness, prevent substance abuse and addiction, and provide treatments and supports to foster recovery while ensuring access and better outcomes for all.

National Institute on Aging Health Information (NIA) - NIA provides health information informed by research and reviewed by experts to help you learn about healthy aging and common health conditions in older adults. Browse our this site. 

National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) - NCCIH conduct and support research and provide information about complementary health products and practices in the context of whole person health.
